# Change a spec once and it changes everywhere

You changed a price in four places last quarter and missed one. In Structured Pages you update the item once. The item page, the filters, the comparison table, the search listing and the version machine readers see all move together, because they are built from that one record rather than copied from it.

### Description

#### Why this is a real problem and not a tidiness preference
Every duplicate of a fact is a future contradiction. The spec sheet says 4.2 kg, the product page says 4.5, the comparison table still carries last year's number, and the PDF a customer downloaded in 2023 says something else again. Nobody chose that. It accumulated, one rushed update at a time, and by the time anyone notices, no one is sure which figure is right.

#### What one record means in practice
There is one place where an item's facts live, and everything the public sees is produced from it. Change the weight and the item page shows the new weight, the range slider re-bounds to include it, the comparison table updates, and every machine-readable version of that page carries the same number. There is no second system to remember and no export step to forget.

#### What it cannot save you from
If the number in your catalog is wrong, it will be wrong everywhere, immediately and consistently. That is genuinely better than being wrong in three places and right in one, because it is visible and fixable in a single edit, but it does mean the accuracy of your data remains your job. The tool guarantees agreement, not correctness.

#### How to check it yourself
Pick any item in the wine varieties catalog on this site. Note a number on the page, then open the same item's plain version and its comparison row. Same number, every time. This is also what makes AI citability work, because a source that contradicts itself is a source worth skipping.

## Frequently asked questions

### What happens after I edit an item?

The published pages reflect it once the site rebuilds or reloads. There is no separate step to push the change into a second system.

### Can two views legitimately look different?

Formatting can differ, so one view may show "4.2 kg" where another carries the raw number. What never happens is two views claiming different values.

### Does this cover FAQs and descriptions too?

Yes. Text on the item record renders into the page and the machine-readable versions from that same source.

### Is this only worth it for big catalogs?

It matters most once you cannot personally remember every item, which for most people is somewhere around a hundred.

### What if I need a different figure for one channel?

Then it becomes a separate field on the record, deliberately, rather than an accidental disagreement between two copies.
