#### Historical Evolution

Japanese's genetic affiliation remains disputed (Japonic isolate; Altaic hypothesis largely abandoned). Old Japanese texts (Man'yōshū, Kojiki) show gradual morphological erosion. Sino-Japanese kanji loans transformed lexicon and literacy; post-WWII script reforms limited kyōiku kanji and standardized orthography. Global soft-power exports sustain L2 interest.

#### Phonology

Japanese has five vowels and mora-timed rhythm: each mora receives roughly equal duration. Pitch accent is lexical in standard Tokyo Japanese (e.g., はし bridge vs chopsticks). Limited consonant clusters; /ɴ/ syllabic nasal is distinctive.

#### Syntax

Japanese is SOV with topic marker は contrasting subject が. Particles mark case and discourse roles; null anaphora is pervasive. Honorific and humble verb forms (keigo) grammaticalize social deixis. Relative clauses precede nouns without relative pronouns.
