The test

Can you put your data in a spreadsheet where every row is one thing and every column means the same thing on every row? Then it fits. That is the whole requirement. It does not have to be for sale, it does not have to carry a price, and it does not have to be physical.

Things that fit that people do not expect to

A parts catalog where the useful filters are bore diameter and what it fits. A menu where a diner narrows by allergen and course. A conference schedule filtered by day, track and room. A reference table of species, materials, standards or regulations, where nobody is buying anything and the value is simply that the data is finally usable. A supplier or member directory filtered by region and speciality.

What is genuinely a bad fit

Long-form articles that are not really a list of comparable things. Anything needing a real shopping cart and payment at checkout, since you can show a price and availability and link out to buy, but there is no checkout here. Data that changes second by second. And anything where every record has a completely different shape from the last one.

Can I run more than one catalog on one site?

Yes. Multiple independent catalogs can live on the same site with their own filters and their own pages, and search can span all of them. This site is doing it right now.

Do I need a price on everything?

No. Leave it out and it disappears from the page. Reference catalogs usually have no prices at all.

Can people buy directly?

Not here. You can show a price and stock level and link to wherever you take orders. Set stock to zero and the item stops showing publicly until it is back.

My data is a bit inconsistent. Is that a blocker?

It is the normal starting point. Cleaning up is usually the first real task, and the pilot exists partly to show you how much of it actually matters.

What if half my records are missing a field?

Missing optional fields are handled. The field simply does not render for that item, rather than showing an empty label.
